Important Debit Card info...
When a sales clerk asks you, "Credit or debit?" - it's important to know the difference.
If you answer credit option to pay, your signature will be required.
If you use the debit option to pay, your Personal Identification number (PIN) will be required. The credit-debit question is really the merchant's way of asking you how you wish to verify your identity - with a signature or PIN. Your debit card will never act as a "charge" card. There are other differences too.
A credit transaction works like a paperless check and requires a signature to complete the transaction, although you may not be asked to sign for transactions under $15. Your signature may reduce the risk of fraud and it allows you to take recourse action against fraudulent transactions if your card is lost or stolen.
Depending on the merchant's transaction time, the funds are removed from your checking account in one to three days. In addition, a higher daily cash limit for a signature-based transaction may be available to you depending on your financial institution's daily cash limit policy.
A debit transaction works like an automated teller machine (ATM) transaction and requires your PIN to complete the transaction. The risk of fraud is increased if you forget to shield your hand while entering your PIN. There is no fraud protection for a PIN-based transaction because the merchant was not asked to verify a signature at the point of sale.
With a debit transaction, funds are usually removed from your checking account immediately or within 24 hours. A lower daily cash limit for a PIN-based transaction is usually in effect, depending on your financial institution's policy. An advantage to a debit transaction is that you can receive cash back as part of the transaction.
If someone is not sure which transaction to select, CapCom Credit Union recommends using a credit transaction because it's a win-win for both you and your credit union. Using your debit card as a credit transaction usually provides a higher level of security and it generates a modest level of income for the credit union, thereby allowing us to keep member costs to a minimum. Why not say "credit" when using your credit union debit cards!
